The earliest I saw an ad for Whitney & Company was 1859 in a Sacramento paper.
They advertised themselves as flour an feed forwarding merchants.
There business grew throughout California with buildings in San Francisco, Sacramento, Shingle Springs, Colfax, and Cisco. When the Central Pacific opened up Nevada, Whitney was there. According to the 1870 Reno newspaper ad they had buildings in Reno, Battle Mountain, Palisade, and Elko.
In 1874 Bamber's Express was purchased and renamed the Whitney & Co. Express after A. D. Whitney. To this day you can find envelopes with 'W & Co' on them. Whitney ads encouraged their patrons to put this on the envelopes so they could get the information quickly.
I could find no reference to them after 1876.
