Reno - Virginia Stage Line
|
This company was incorporated on May 25, 1925 for the purpose of transporting people from Reno to Virginia City and back. With headquarters in the Virginia & Truckee Railroad Depot in Carson City, the original stock holders were FE Murphy, SC Bigalow and William Cobb. The company started with $500 in cash. Murphy (president) and Bigalow (secretary-treasurer) each had 167 shares ad Cobb had (vice president) had 166 shares.
Cobb was in charge of the day-to-day operations. He was paid $6.00 a day to make two round trips daily. If he had to make an additional trip he would be paid eight cents a mile.
By May of 1926 he had acquired 1,300 shares. Murphy and Bigalow each had 50. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad owned 2,600 and always gave voting rights to Murphy. Something must have happened down the road.
In 1930 the shares had changed dramatically. Bigalow and Murphy still had 50 apiece. The auditor E. W. Miller had 150 shares and the V&T had 4,200 shares. Miller was given a temporary seat on the board and the directors voted unanimously to sell the company to the Virginia-Truckee Transit Company (Murphy was president). Cobb would continue to drive for this new company for nearly a decade.
The stock certificate (next page was issued to Bill Cobb on January 9, 1929. The reverse shows that on June 11, 1930 Bill Cobb turned this stock
over to EW Miller. That is the 150 shares that allowed Miller, the company’s auditor, to act as a temporary director. His vote helped to make the sale of the company to the Virginia-Truckee Transit Company official.
The new company would continue to run from Reno to Virginia City, but also go down to Carson City and even as far as Camp Richardson on Lake Tahoe.
