I can’t find any information on this mining claim. I do know it is too bad it didn’t pan out as 200 feet in a rich mine was a lot of money!
Although this is a fabulous piece, one must wonder if it is legitimate. 1. There is a signature on back, but it is in the exact same handwriting as the front. 2. The handwriting is not the same as the signature. 3. There is no signature in the ‘Deputy’ box. 4. There is no Book number or page number. One thing for sure, the Edmund Gallagher signature and the c1861 form is genuine. But whether this is a forgery or authentic fantasy piece is difficult to tell! |
* Yes, the state says California, but the map shows Esmeralda County in Nevada. That is because both states claimed this very rich and valuable mining region. A few years later an official survey put this region just inside Nevada. The name of the town was changed to Aurora.
